About us
Leukerbad a special place in our hearts.
The Leukerbad Village places a special spot in our lives. When my husband Simon was growing up, my parent-in law took him and his brothers to Leukerbad for school holidays. In Summer, their holiday in Leukerbad was filled with activities such as hiking, cycling, climbing and during winter, they went for skiing and relaxed those sore muscles from walking and skiing at what Leukerbad is known for - thermal baths of course.
Fast forward to early 2018, Simon introduced this dainty albeit beautiful village of Leukerbad to myself and our two daughters. At that point our youngest daughter Emelyn was 1 year old and our eldest daughter Olivia was 3 years of age.
We travelled light and took the SBB train from Sarnen to Leuk. We then took the connecting bus from Leuk to Leukerbad. Just the view from Leuk to Leukerbad was out of this world. The panorama was filled with vineyards to the freshly white dusted forests, mountains, valleys and rooftops! All these picture perfect winter scene transports us to the fairytale scenes of the movie Frozen.
We chose to stay in an apartment booked through Air B&B for our 10 days stay in Leukerbad. There are of course other beautiful family friendly hotels or spa hotels options available too. No doubt hotels would offer the luxuries of room service, daily room cleaning and delicious spread of buffet breakfast and some even entry to its own in-house spa.
However, for our family staying in an Air B&B accommodation was much kinder to our Borneo earned budget and our needs. In addition to that, as much as we love to dine out, we also love to cook. So the availability of a kitchen gave us the opportunity to experiment with the local produce.
Throughout our stay in Leukerbad we went almost every day to Leukerbad Therme. The kids love it and between Simon and myself we took turns to relax and enjoy the spa that offers various steam and sauna rooms. We also enrolled Olivia to the Leukerbad Kid’s Ski School for her very first ski lessons.
Some of our friends visited us and also stayed in Leukerbad during this time. Together, besides going for the thermal bath, we engaged in different activities like taking the cable car to Gemmi for sledging and to Torrent for skiing and walks. The activities here were rewarded with heart stopping views of the Alps. Every corner, every alleys, every mountain scenes takes your worries away, gives a sense of peace to the mind and soul.
Our first visit in Jan 2018 ended on such a positive note that we returned to Leukerbad twice in 2019 (in January 2019 and Dec 2019). Both times for 10 days on each stay. We just could not get enough of the thermal baths and experiencing the beauty of this small village named Leukerbad. Our 3 winters here were very memorable, special and getting away from the busy life schedule makes each visit poetic for our souls.
2020 hit the world with a big bang! In middle of March 2020 our travel & tour business Bike and Tours and our Bukit Piton Project in Borneo was badly impacted by the Control Movement Order in relation to flatten the spread of a virus named Corona! The virus that took so many lives all around the world, the virus that changed the dynamics of our lives. I shall not elaborate further as I am sure all of you hear about it day in and day out since December 2019 and mid 2020. The closure of borders since middle March 2020 has resulted in our business being met with zero income, cancellations and painful refunds. We have our own family to support and employees who depend on us to support their own families. That is the situation and we just need to be optimistic despite the thin hope. Enough of ranting already.
This time life did not throw us lemons where we could at least make lemonade. This time around it dropped us mountainous huge rocks. So looks like we need to go climbing/bouldering. We decided to take the leap of faith. Instead of sulking and seeing our savings evaporates in the thin air, we invested in a cosy studio apartment in Leukerbad. Crazy? Well as I said it is a leap of faith. The studio will be up for vacation rental effective 15 June 2020. With help from family members and friends in Switzerland, we did our very best to turn the house into a home. A place that is of comfort for you in Leukerbad. The new set-up is leveraged on our experience and knowledge from running our own Bike and Tours Bed and Breakfast in Borneo.
While we understand that some of you do not want to travel too far this summer and would like to unwind in Switzerland for wellness, hikes, climbing, walks or simply being outdoor (of course with respecting the social distancing rules), well there is a studio apartment in Leukerbad waiting for you. If the studio apartment is not what you are looking for, we during the lockdown, managed to build a small network with the local communities of Leukerbad. As such we would be able to provide recommendations and reservations for your stay and activities in Leukerbad.
